Whenever I think of Michael Peca, this play comes to mind:
So when I heard today that he was retiring, that hit was the first thing I thought of.
Peca’s tenure in Buffalo, as you may recall, didn’t end well. He sat out his final season here (2000-01) before being traded for Tim Connolly and Taylor Pyatt.
In hindsight, I think we tend to blame the Rigas family more than Peca for that debacle. Either way, Peca was gone and, with Hasek out the door a week later, the franchise seemed to lack a soul.
I’ve always been a Peca fan. I even advocated for his signing in the summer of 2007. He was gritty and hard working. He won the Selke twice as the league’s top forward, once as a Sabre.
In a lot of ways, he’s what we love about Paul Gaustad today.
Minus the pickles.
