From the Buffalo News’ Rodney McKissic:
Drew Willy, the former UB quarterback, has been signed to the practice squad by the Colts. The Indianapolis Colts have placed sixth-year veteran quarterback Jim Sorgi on injured reserve with a shoulder injury.
Willy, who holds pretty much every passing record in UB history, originally signed with the Ravens after going undrafted in April. He was cut after training camp and made one more brief stint with their practice squad before being cut again.
It’s another Buffalo connection for former Bills general manager Bill Polian, who has also had former Bulls Drew Haddad, Ramon Guzman and Jamie Richard on his Colts roster.
If Willy sticks around (and I hope he does — he’s a very accurate quarterback), he will have a homecoming of sorts when Indianapolis plays the Bills in Week 17 with an undefeated season potentially on the line.
The Colts worked out former Bills first-round pick and UFL champion (yeah, I went there) J.P. Losman late last week.
In other UB football news, senior wide receivers Naaman Roosevelt and Brett Hamlin will each play in post-season showcase games.
Roosevelt, UB’s all-time receiving leader (who should be playing on Sundays this time next year) has been invited to the 85th Annual East-West Shrine game in Orlando, Fla. on Jan. 23. The East squad will be coached by Romeo Crennel.
Hamlin will travel to El Paso, Texas to take part in the Texas vs. The Nation on Feb. 6. Hamlin was the Bulls most sure-handed receiver the last two seasons.
Freshman defensive end Steven Means was also honored. Phil Steele Magazine named Means an all-freshman defensive lineman.
Aldon Smith of Missouri, Scott Vallone of Rutgers and USC’s Nick Perry were also named to the all-freshman d-line. Pretty good company.
