Not that anybody out there thinks the NHL’s rules on shots to the head are remotely adequate, but watch this video from Wednesday’s AHL tilt between Albany and Adirondack…
This is the first time I’ve seen a hit like that from that angle, and it was enough to turn my stomach.
The victim — Adirondack’s Patrick Maroon — was released from the hospital today after being taken off the ice on a stretcher. Albany’s Nicholas Blanchard was suspended indefinitely as the AHL reviews video of the hit.
Here’s hoping the AHL brass get a look at the video above and keep Blanchard off the ice for a while. Of course, if they follow NHL standards, Blanchard will be hit with a $50 fine and 20 minutes of wearing a dunce cap in the corner.
