Syracuse sophomore guard (and Niagara Falls native) Jonny Flynn has been drafted 6th overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves. Of course, they also selected Ricky Rubio with the 5th pick, so it’s likely that one point guard will be traded at some point tonight. For the moment though, Jonny is a Wolf. Ryan and I both saw him play at Niagara Falls High School, and it’s pretty cool to see a local guy (especially one who helped our high school to a 2005 NYS title) drafted in the lottery.
Hometown connection aside, Flynn will help whatever team he’s on come Opening Night. Thanks to the recent success of undersized guards like Nate Robinson and Aaron Brooks, it’s gratifying to see that the NBA’s traditional height biases didn’t prevent a talented player from being drafted in the lottery. So congrats, Jonny. Somebody got a damn good point guard tonight.
