Mikael to Ak Bars

by Ryan

With Patrick Lalime’s future up in the air, the Sabres were thankful to have the chance to re-sign Mikael Telqvist. Well, not anymore.

The goaltender’s career in Buffalo lasted just six games, as the pending unrestricted free agent has signed to play with Ak Bars of Russia’s KHL. A report out of Sweden said Tellqvist signed for about $1.3 million, up from this season’s NHL salary of $800,000.

Well, it was fun while it lasted. What this means for Miller’s backup role is anybody’s guess. Information on Lalime’s injury has been sparse, and a hip injury at this stage of Patrick’s career could mean retirement. I doubt we hear much more about his status for some time, unless they want to reduce some speculation for us all.

If they don’t, we may want to join in on the UFA goaltender discussion…

  1. There isn’t much in the UFA goaltender discussion so that may not help. I don’t think that making a run at Tellqvist was going to sway his decision. Playing with Ak Bars gives him the chance to start which he wasn’t going to get in the NHL.

Too bad we couldn’t sign Telqvist—then our goalies would have looked like the McPoyle brothers from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
