Buffalo – 8-1-1

So uh, this game can’t be either of the “1s.”

It’s been a long time since the Sabres last took to the ice, and since then there has been a lot of talk about the makeup of this team. Words like “soft” and “mentally weak” have been thrown around, and I don’t disagree with any of those terms. The season has slipped away once again, and there will be consequences for it this summer. Finally. Hopefully.

There is no need to be hopelessly optimistic about this anymore: the Sabres aren’t making the playoffs. That doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot to play for tonight. All you can hope for is that this team just… plays hockey. The worst possible sign we could get from this team is if they close out the season with the crash and burn routine. To me it would signal more than just underachievement, but a massive red flag for the future. There are people in Sabres uniforms that, quite frankly, should be playing for that same right come October. There are a lot of directions the team can go, and quite a few players better realize they may not be headed that same direction.

Dammit, just play with some sense of pride for once.

I disagree, Ryan, I don’t want them to play with pride. I want them to embarrass themselves into a state of absolute disgrace. I can’t watch Tallinder, McArthur, Paille, and Hecht anymore. Even when they are playing well I can’t enjoy the sport. They never have any fire in their eyes. It’s hard to describe. This team is almost ruining the entire sport for me.

Ooh, wow, so they score a few goals in the third period against a perennial basement dweller? Big fucking deal. I have no love for this core of players anymore, and neither should any other fans. We’re blinded by our love for the Buffalo hockey tradition, we place un-deserved faith in a core passion-less losers. I’m bitter, because I used to love watching hockey.
